Ezetimibe is a dietary cholesterol absorption inhibitor. The chemical name of ezetimibe is 1-(4-fluorophenyl)-3(R)-[3-(4-fluorophenyl)-3(S)-hydroxypropyl]-4(S)-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-azetidinone. The molecular formula is C 24 H 21 F 2 NO 3 . Its molecular weight is 409.4 and its structural formula is: Ezetimibe, USP is a white to an off-white crystalline powder. It is freely soluble in methanol and acetone, soluble in ethanol and practically insoluble in water. Ezetimibe has a melting point of about 163°C and is stable at ambient temperature. Each ezetimibe tablet, USP available for oral administration contains 10 mg of ezetimibe. In addition, each tablet contains the following inactive ingredients: crospovidone, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, pregelatinized starch (botanical source: maize), sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium stearyl fumarate.
