Memantine hydrochloride is an orally active NMDA receptor antagonist. The chemical name for memantine hydrochloride is 1-amino-3,5-dimethyladamantane hydrochloride with the following structural formula: The molecular formula is C 12 H 21 N•HCl and the molecular weight is 215.8. Memantine hydrochloride, USP occurs as white to off-white powder. It is slightly soluble in water. Memantine hydrochloride extended-release capsules intended for oral administration contain 7 mg, 14 mg, 21 mg, or 28 mg of memantine hydrochloride. In addition, each capsule contains the following inactive ingredients: ethyl cellulose, gelatin, hypromellose, sodium lauryl sulfate, sugar spheres, talc, triethyl citrate and titanium dioxide. Additionally capsule shell of 14 mg contains FD&C blue 1, FD&C red 3, FD&C yellow 6 and iron oxide yellow. Capsule shell of 21 mg and 28 mg contains FD&C blue 2 and iron oxide yellow. The capsule shell is printed with black pharmaceutical ink which contains following ingredients: butyl alcohol, dehydrated alcohol, iron oxide black, isopropyl alcohol, potassium hydroxide, propylene glycol, shellac, strong ammonia solution and purified water.
