Telmisartan Tablets, USP are a non-peptide angiotensin II receptor (type AT 1 ) antagonist. Telmisartan, USP is chemically described as 4’-[[4-methyl-6-(1-methyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-2-propyl-1H-benzimidazol-1- yl] methyl]biphenyl-2-carboxylic acid. Its empirical formula is C 33 H 30 N 4 O 2 , its molecular weight is 514.6 and its structural formula is: Telmisartan, USP is a white to slightly yellowish crystalline powder. It is practically insoluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol, sparingly soluble in methylene chloride. It dissolves in 1M sodium hydroxide. Telmisartan is available as tablets for oral administration, containing 20 mg, 40 mg or 80 mg of telmisartan, USP. The tablets contain the following inactive ingredients: crospovidone, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, meglumine, povidone and sodium hydroxide pellets. Telmisartan Tablets, USP are hygroscopic and require protection from moisture. FDA approved dissolution test specifications differ from USP.
