Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It has the following structural formula: Allopurinol is known chemically as 1,5-dihydro-4H-pyrazolo [3,4-d] pyrimidin-4-oneand it has a molecular weight of 136.11 g/mol. Its solubility in water at 37°C is 80.0 mg/dL and is greater in an alkaline solution. It is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor which is administered orally. Each tablet for oral administration contains either 100 mg, 200 mg or 300 mg of allopurinol, USP and the following inactive ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, povidone and FD& C Yellow No. 6 aluminum Lake (only for 300 mg).
