Fluvoxamine maleate, USP is a selective serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) belonging to the chemical series, the 2-aminoethyl oxime ethers of aralkylketones. It is chemically unrelated to other SSRIs and clomipramine. It is chemically designated as 5-methoxy-4′-(trifluoromethyl) valerophenone (E)-O-(2-aminoethyl) oxime maleate (1:1) and has the molecular formula C 15 H 21 O 2 N 2 F 3 •C 4 H 4 O 4 . Its molecular weight is 434.4. The structural formula is: Fluvoxamine maleate, USP is a white to off-white powder which is sparingly soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol and chloroform and practically insoluble in diethyl ether. Fluvoxamine maleate tablets, USP are available in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg strengths for oral administration. In addition to the active ingredient, fluvoxamine maleate USP, each tablet contains the following inactive ingredients: hydroxyethyl cellulose (25 mg and 50 mg), hydroxypropyl cellulose (100 mg), hypromellose (100 mg), iron oxide black (100 mg), iron oxide red (100 mg), iron oxide yellow (50 mg and 100 mg), magnesium stearate, mannitol, polyethylene glycol and titanium dioxide.
