Allopurinol, USP is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It has the following structural formula: Molecular Formula: C 5 H 4 N 4 O Allopurinol is known chemically as 1, 5-dihydro-4 H -pyrazolo [3, 4- d ] pyrimidin-4-one and it has a molecular weight of 136.11 g/mol. It is slightly soluble in sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide solution, very slightly soluble in water and alcohol, practically insoluble in chloroform and ether. It is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor which is administered orally.
