Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic and antihypertensive. It is the 3, 4-dihydro derivative of chlorothiazide. It is chemically designated as 6-chloro-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine- 7-sulfonamide 1,1-dioxide and has the following structural formula: Hydrochlorothiazide is a white, or practically white, crystalline powder which is slightly soluble in water, but freely soluble in sodium hydroxide solution, in n-butylamine, and in dimethylformamide; sparingly soluble in methanol, insoluble in ether, in chloroform, and in dilute mineral acids. Each tablet for oral administration contains 25 mg and 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide. In addition, each tablet contains the following inactive ingredients: FD&C yellow #6, Microcrystalline cellulose, Lactose, Sodium starch glycolate, Stearic acid and Magnesium stearate.
