Olmesartan medoxomil, a prodrug, is hydrolyzed to olmesartan during absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. Olmesartan is a selective AT1 subtype angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Olmesartan medoxomil is described chemically as 1H-Imidazole-5-carboxylic acid, 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methyl-ethyl)-2-Propyl-1-[[2’-(1H tetrazol-5-yl) [1,1’-biphenyl]-4-yl]methyl-, (5- methyl-2-oxo-1, 3-dioxol-4-yl) methyl ester. Its empirical formula is C 29 H 30 N 6 O 6 and its structural formula is: Olmesartan medoxomil USP is a white to off-white crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 558.6. It is practically insoluble in water and in heptane, slightly soluble in ethanol (96%), sparingly soluble in methanol. Olmesartan medoxomil is available for oral use as film-coated tablets containing 5 mg, 20 mg, or 40 mg of olmesartan medoxomil and the following inactive ingredients: hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, talc, titanium dioxide and (5 mg only) yellow iron oxide.
