Lamotrigine, USP, an AED of the phenyltriazine class, is chemically unrelated to existing AEDs. Lamotrigine’s chemical name is 3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)- as -triazine, its molecular formula is C 9 H 7 N 5 Cl 2 , and its molecular weight is 256.09 g/mol. Lamotrigine, USP is a white powder and has a pKa of 5.7. Lamotrigine, USP is slightly soluble in 0.1 N hydrochloric acid, in acetone, in methanol, and in water. The structural formula is: Lamotrigine tablets for oral suspension (chewable, dispersible tablets), 5 mg and 25 mg are supplied for oral administration. The tablets contain 5 mg (white to off-white) or 25 mg (white to off-white) of lamotrigine, USP and the following inactive ingredients: aspartame, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone K-25, sodium starch glycolate and strawberry guarana 586997 AP 0551.
