Olmesartan medoxomil tablets USP, a prodrug, is hydrolyzed to olmesartan during absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. Olmesartan is a selective AT1 subtype angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Olmesartan medoxomil tablets, USP is described chemically as 1H-imidazole-5-carboxylic acid, 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-2-propyl-1-[[2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) [1, 1’-biphenyl]-4-yl] methyl]-, (5-methyl-2-oxo-1, 3-dioxol-4-yl) methyl ester. Its molecular formula is C 29 H 30 N 6 O 6 and its structural formula is: Olmesartan medoxomil USP, is a white to off-white, crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 558.59. It is sparingly soluble in methanol and practically insoluble in water. Olmesartan medoxomil USP is available for oral use as film-coated tablets containing 5 mg, 20 mg, or 40 mg of olmesartan medoxomil and the following inactive ingredients: hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, low-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, talc, titanium dioxide, and (5 mg only) yellow iron oxide.
