Gabapentin is described as 1-(aminomethyl) cyclohexaneacetic acid with a molecular formula of C 9 H 17 NO 2 and a molecular weight of 171.24. Gabapentin is a white to off-white crystalline solid with a pK a1 of 3.7 and a pK a2 of 10.7. It is freely soluble in water and both basic and acidic aqueous solutions. The log of the partition coefficient (n-octanol/0.05M phosphate buffer) at pH 7.4 is -1.25. It has the following structural formula: Gabapentin capsules, USP are for oral administration and contain 100 mg, 300 mg and 400 mg of gabapentin, USP. In addition, each capsule contains the following inactive ingredients: Mannitol, maize starch and talc. The 100 mg, 300 mg and 400 mg capsule imprinting ink contain the following inactive ingredients: butyl alcohol, dehydrated alcohol, FD & C blue #1 aluminum lake, isopropyl alcohol, povidone, propylene glycol, shellac, sodium hydroxide and titanium dioxide. The 100 mg capsule shell contains gelatin and titanium dioxide. The 300 mg capsule shell contains gelatin, ferric oxide yellow and titanium dioxide.
