Paroxetine hydrochloride tablets, USP are an orally administered psychotropic drug. It is the hydrochloride salt of a phenylpiperidine compound identified chemically as (3 S - trans )-3-[(1,3-Benzodioxol-5-yloxy)methyl]-4-(4-fluorophenyl)-piperidine hydrochloride hemihydrate and has the molecular formula of C 19 H 20 FNO 3 •HCl•1/2H 2 O. The molecular weight is 374.8 (329.4 as free base). The structural formula of paroxetine hydrochloride is: Paroxetine hydrochloride, USP (hemihydrate) is an odorless, white or almost white crystalline powder, having a melting point range of 129° to 131°C and a solubility of 5.4 mg/mL in water. Each film-coated tablet contains paroxetine hydrochloride hemihydrate equivalent to 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg or 40 mg paroxetine. Inactive ingredients consist of dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate, FD&C Blue No. 1 Aluminum Lake, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polydextrose, polyethylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium starch glycolate (potato), titanium dioxide and triacetin.
