Propafenone hydrochloride extended-release capsules, USP is an antiarrhythmic drug supplied in extended-release capsules of 225, 325 and 425 mg for oral administration. Chemically, propafenone hydrochloride is 2′-[2-hydroxy-3-(propylamino)propoxy]-3-phenylpropiophenone hydrochloride, with a molecular weight of 377.92. The molecular formula is C 21 H 27 NO 3 •HCl. Propafenone HCl has some structural similarities to beta-blocking agents. The structural formula of propafenone HCl is given below: Propafenone Hydrochloride, USP occurs as colorless crystals or white crystalline powder with a very bitter taste. It is slightly soluble in water (20°C), chloroform, and ethanol. Propafenone hydrochloride extended-release capsules, USP are filled with round 2 mm mini-tablets containing propafenone hydrochloride, USP and the following inactive ingredients: hypromellose, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, gelatin, shellac, dehydrated alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, propylene glycol, strong ammonia solution, FD&C Blue 1 and FD&C Red 3 (225 mg and 325 mg only). The 225 mg and 325 mg capsule also contains FD&C Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine) as a color additive. Meets USP Dissolution Test #4. Propafenone Hydrochloride Structural Formula
